Field Trips:  Friday 30th October, 2009

The ICTC Society is proud to present three field trips each offering a different perspective of Geelong and the surrounding regions. Times for all field trips are indicated below. Delegates are requested to indicate their order of preference for field trips on the registration form. Maximum and minimum numbers apply for each field trip. Catering will include morning tea and lunch.  Further information including itineraries will be included on the web site in due course.

Field Trip 1: Marinas and Harbours (Coach Tour):  Departing Busport 9.00am and returning at approximately 4.00pm.

Tourism is a major component of the Geelong economy with some 6.6 million visitors per annum including 99,000 international overnight visitors in 2006-7. The coast is a prominent tourism asset for the region. Marinas and harbours not only attract visitors but also act as a base for marine based industries such as boat building and servicing. In the Geelong region there are also growing commercial fishing and aquaculture industries and a network of projects are under way or being developed to service this need.

Delegates will get an opportunity to see a range of commercial coastal developments. First stop will be the site for a Marine Industry Precinct planned for vacant industrial land sandwiched between Australia’s 6th largest port and Osborne House, an 1840’s homestead set on the banks of Corio Bay.

The coach will then take delegates along the scenic Central Geelong Waterfront and then it is onto Portarlington, an historic fishing town with a growing commercial fishing and aquaculture industry. Plans will be shared for a proposed new safe harbour project.

Crossing the Bellarine Peninsula delegates will travel to Queenscliff Harbour sitting at the Heads of Port Phillip. It is currently being expanded and upgraded under a Public Private Partnership arrangement.

After an opportunity to explore the boutiques and curiosity shops in beautiful Queenscliff, delegates will return by coach to Geelong.

This Field Trip is ideally suited to those interested in planning, designing and operating public and commercial harbours.

After leaving Deakin University, delegates will travel south through the exciting new suburb of Armstrong Creek. Over the next 15 years, it will be home to 60,000 people with a range of housing densities, sub-regional activitiy centre and employment areas.
